3ENGLEWOOD, NJ – A former Dumont mayor and current Jersey City police sergeant has been arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a child he met on social media, prosecutors said Monday.

Andrew LaBruno, 44, was charged with first-degree aggravated sexual assault, second-degree sexual assault, and third-degree endangering the welfare of a child, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.

LaBruno nearly became a New Jersey legislator on Election Day, losing a close election to his Republican opponent.

Investigators said LaBruno met the juvenile online and arranged to meet at the child’s home in Englewood, where the assault allegedly occurred while the victim was home alone.
