A driver’s group wants either Gov. Phil Murphy or Gov.-elect Mikie Sherrill to spare motorists from the New Jersey Turnpike Authority’s annual 3% toll increase, the fifth such toll hike since 2020.

The toll hike is part of the Turnpike Authority’s $2.8 billion 2026 budget for operation, maintenance and improvement of the Turnpike and Garden State Parkway.

The budget was introduced and approved by a 7-0 vote of the authority’s Board of Commissioners Tuesday and the toll rate increase would take effect on January 1, 2026.

Combined with rising prices and inflation, the 2026 toll increase is too much for people to afford, said Steve Carrellas, National Motorists Association state policy director. Since the 2020 increase, tolls have risen a total of 48% on the Turnpike and 39% on the Parkw
