The most compelling event of a fairly compelling day here in Washington did not take place in the well of the House of Representatives, or in a hearing room thick with mahogany, or amid the marble effigies in the hallways of the Capitol. It took place in a small area of the lawn on the House side of the Capitol. Survivors of Jeffrey Epstein’s empire of moneyed sleaze came to talk to the country in advance of the passage of a bill demanding that all the files be laid before “a candid world,” as the Declaration of Independence calls it.
