Canada’s team was sabotaged in its last appearance in the World Cup by Cricket Canada, its very own national body.

Canada had stunned Test nation Ireland in a first-round encounter in the World Twenty20 Cup in 2024 and then-coach Pubudu Dassanayake sensed a place in the second round was a distinct possibility.

But then the sky fell on him and his squad.

Instead of enjoying the moment, Dassanayake — who had trained and meticulously picked the best to represent the country — was instructed by the Cricket Canada board that a new bunch of players was being airlifted to help the squad. He was told in no uncertain terms: Play them or be fired.

Dassanayake told Postmedia in an exclusive interview he “felt handcuffed. All that hard work was being destroyed.”
