PEORIA ( 25News Now ) - Some Illinois American Water customers ready to pay their next bill may see it reduced or be zero dollars, thanks to a bill credit.

Illinois American Water said the credit stems from the company receiving proceeds from a settlement with various PFAS manufacturers, according to an email from the company that will be sent to customers in this month’s bill.

PFAS, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are manufactured chemicals historically used in many household products including nonstick cookware like Teflon, stain repellants like Scotchgard and waterproofing like GORE-TEX. Illinois American Water said there are thousands of PFAS chemicals that persist in the environment.
