President Donald Trump went to great lengths to hail Saudi Arabia as a “great ally” as Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman joined him in the Oval Office to announce a $1 trillion investment in the United States.

But the complicated relationship between the countries was on full display when Trump accused a reporter of “embarrassing” his guest by asking questions related to responsibility for the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the 2018 assassination of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi .
