John Main has been elected as Nunavut's new premier following a vote by members of the Legislative Assembly. The election took place during the territory's leadership forum on Tuesday. Main, who represents Arviat North-Whale Cove, was chosen over David Akeeagok, who also sought the position. During the forum, both candidates spent approximately four hours responding to questions from their colleagues. They outlined their experiences and shared their priorities for the upcoming four-year term. Main emphasized the importance of building partnerships with various stakeholders, including governments, Indigenous organizations, regional Inuit associations, and private companies. He stated, "Forming those relationships is something I’m most proud of from my time in politics." Main's agenda includes developing new revenue sources for Nunavut, particularly in natural gas. He also plans to implement a virtual-first approach to healthcare, establish an elder van program, and create an on-the-land treatment program in every community. Addressing unemployment, he expressed a desire to educate Nunavummiut and generate job opportunities within communities. Main has been a member of the Legislative Assembly since 2017 and has held several key positions, including minister of health and minister responsible for suicide prevention. In addition to electing a new premier, the assembly also elected David Joanasie, the MLA for South Baffin, as Speaker. Following the election of the premier, MLAs will select up to eight cabinet ministers. The new premier will then assign cabinet portfolios among the cabinet members in the coming days. This election process is part of Nunavut's unique consensus government system, which does not involve political parties. Only 21 of the 22 electoral districts were represented during the assembly meeting, as voters in the Aggu riding will return to the polls on December 15 due to a tie between candidates. The new premier and cabinet ministers are scheduled to be sworn in on Thursday at Nunavut’s Legislative Assembly.
