AUSTIN, Texas — Recycled Reads, the Austin Public Library’s secondhand bookstore , will shut its doors in January as city leaders work to close a multimillion-dollar budget shortfall.
As part of the city’s amended budget for the next fiscal year, which aims to address a $33 million deficit, officials plan to end the lease for Recycled Reads’ storefront.
Jan. 17, 2026, will be the last day Recycled Reads will be open to the public, the city said.
The store, located at 5335 Burnet Road, was created in 2009 as part of a way to achieve the city of Austin’s call for zero-waste. It has books the library no longer needs and receives donations from the public.
