COLUMBUS — Public schools would be authorized to display the Ten Commandments on school grounds under legislation approved by the Ohio Senate Education Committee on Tuesday.
Senate Bill 34, sponsored by state Sen. Terry Johnson (R., McDermott), would require public schools that receive donations to do so to display at least four of the following “founding documents” in each classroom where students in Grades 4-12 are taught history or social studies: Ten Commandments, Mayflower Compact, Declaration of Independence, Northwest Ordinance, Magna Carta, Bill of Rights, U.S. Constitution, Articles of Confederation, or the mottoes of the United States and Ohio.
The legislation also allows a public school to erect a monument inscribed with the Ten Commandments on school grounds.
