(NEXSTAR) – While the prospect of receiving a $2,000 dividend from the U.S.’s tariff revenue may sound enticing, recent analyses suggest it may be more costly than it seems.

Earlier this month, President Trump wrote on Truth Social that Americans would receive “a dividend of at least $2,000 a person” from the tariff revenue the U.S. has collected this year. Over the weekend, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent noted the dividends would go to “working families” and there would be “an income limit,” following in line with other methods used by the government to disburse payments.

Aside from a White House official telling The Hill that the Trump administration “is committed to putting [tariff revenue] to good use for the American people,” few additional details have been shared about the plan,
