According to keynote speaker Sam Demma, young people who are entering the labour market may be carrying around a giant invisible backpack, and sometimes they may need help when it comes to unloading the heavier items that are weighing them down.

Demma was one speaker who addressed about 80 attendees during the inaugural Breaking Barriers: A Journey to Employment event, held on Tuesday at the Dev Centre.

Hosted by the Eastern Ontario Training Board, and a variety of supporting community agencies, the event aimed to equip participants with tools and inspiration to help them stand out in the local labour market. Targeting individuals aged 17-30, the event also aimed to bridge the gap between employers and young people who are looking for a career.
