A New York jury convicted a Schenectady man accused of crashing his Mercedes into an AT&T store where his ex-girlfriend worked, then tearing through the business with a baseball bat while shouting for her.
Steven Carrion, 33, was found guilty Tuesday, Nov. 18, of eight charges stemming from the September 2022 incident at Mohawk Commons in Niskayuna, according to the Schenectady County District Attorney’s Office. Jurors deliberated for just two hours.
Carrion had been served with a full stay-away order of protection the morning of Sept. 25, 2022. Hours later, he drove his Mercedes directly into the front of the AT&T storefront, causing extensive damage. His ex-girlfriend, who worked at the location, was inside at the time.
Carrion then grabbed a baseball bat from his vehicle and smashed displays, equipment, and other inventory while searching for her, prosecutors said. Store surveillance footage captured him moving through the sales floor and employee-only areas.
During 911 calls, Carrion could be heard yelling “daddy’s home,” according to prosecutors.
He was taken into custody as he exited the store. Officers later searched his vehicle and found a kerosene can and several shotgun shells.
A subsequent search of Carrion’s Troy apartment revealed kerosene spread throughout the unit, an active stove burner, and a fan blowing, along with the protection order inside a bedroom that had been doused in the ignitable liquid.
Forensic testing linked Carrion’s blood and DNA to the baseball bat recovered from inside the store.
At trial, Carrion’s defense argued he acted in a state of “madness,” but jurors rejected the claim and convicted him on the following counts:
- Three counts of burglary
- Reckless endangerment
- Two counts of criminal mischief
- Two counts of criminal contempt
Carrion faces a minimum of 15 years in prison when he is sentenced in January 2026.
