WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Los Juanes, a Mexican restaurant and adjoining Latin market that has served Winston-Salem for more than a decade, is shifting its operations as fears over the state’s immigration crackdown grow in the Triad.
Owner Juan Martinez says he wants to protect the customers and employees. He canceled a live music event last Friday and closed the restaurant and market for the day on Monday, saying he acted out of an abundance of caution.
Martinez says he reopened Tuesday only after asking his employees how they wanted to move forward.
His son and employee, Chucho Hernandez, says recent Border Patrol activity in Charlotte has raised concerns among workers and customers. “I think now it's more surreal, because it's actually happening,” he said. “But it's more scary, because i
