COLUMBIA, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - A group of South Carolina lawmakers voted against advancing what would’ve been the nation’s most restrictive bill against abortion.
The South Carolina Senate Medical Affairs Subcommittee voted 3-2 against the bill, S.323, after a meeting on Tuesday. While the bill’s immediate future is unclear, it could be revived in the future.
It’s a setback for a proposal that, if fully passed, would have allowed judges to sentence women to years in prison for abortions, and also restricted the use of IUDs and in vitro fertilization . It would’ve also banned all abortions unless the woman’s life is threatened.
