RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - There are four new “left turn hardening” traffic measures in Richmond to reduce crashes involving pedestrians, bikes and scooters.
The black and yellow striped bumps physically prevent drivers from cutting corners or turning too fast to make a yellow light.
The technology forces a 90-degree turn, giving both drivers and pedestrians extra seconds to react.
The initiative is a partnership with the city and Virginia Commonwealth University.
“One way of eliminating severe crashes is to be very careful at intersections where people are making turns,” said Andy Boenau, transportation engineering program manager for the city.
VCU Police Chief Clarence Hunter says the measures are working, even after just one week of installation.
