NEWARK – The warm-up portion of Seton Hall basketball’s schedule is over, and plenty of question marks remain after a 5-0 start against low-level competition.
But one thing seems clear as the Pirates head to the Maui Invitational and a serious step up in class: Tajuan Simpkins has been this team’s best player thus far.
The junior guard, a New Yorker who transferred from Elon, is their leading scorer and most efficient performer. Both traits were on display during Tuesday’s 68-45 drubbing of New Haven – a transitional Division I program in the Northeast Conference. Simpkins tallied 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range.
He’s been consistent, versatile and confident while embracing the sixth-man role – exactly what head coach Shaheen Holloway wants.
