SOUTH BEND – CJ Carr knows what to do when an opponent jumps offside.

That's when it's time for a play that might be best described as "Malachi Fields is down there somewhere."

Notre Dame and its redshirt freshman quarterback have prepared endlessly for the moments when defenses give them a free play. When a flag is thrown at the snap, the Irish dump the play they had called and Carr instead immediately looks at Fields, who takes off downfield in the hopes of bringing in a long reception.

The strategy worked to spectacular effect Saturday against then-No. 23 Pittsburgh. On the final play of the first quarter, a delayed snap got Pitt to jump and Carr quickly floated the ball down the left hash in the direction of his 6-foot-4 receiver.
