PHOENIX (AZFamily) — More and more people in the United States are falling behind on their utility bills, according to new analysis on consumer data released this week.

The Century Foundation , a self-proclaimed progressive, nonpartisan think tank, found that Arizona has among the highest numbers of households with severely overdue utility bills and also one of the highest average monthly bills at $289 .

“It’s horrifying, because this could be you tomorrow, if you lose your job,” said Tempe resident Yolina Petkova.

The analysis revealed that 161,000 Arizona households are severely behind on their utility bills, putting them at risk of going without power.
