CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) - It’s the season for sniffles, and there are a variety of contributing viruses.

The latest report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows a national rise in the virus that causes the common cold.

It’s also flu season, and while there hasn’t been much activity yet nationally, health officials are warning of a new mutated strain of the influenza virus .

It’s called subclade K, and it could make for a pretty severe flu season.

CDC numbers also show fewer people are getting their flu shot.

While the new subclade K variant is not included in the current formula, health leaders say skipping out on the vaccine can put people at risk for more severe symptoms if they do become sick.
