Tuesday was a busy day for the Boston Red Sox front office as they looked to add David Sandlin, Tyler Uberstine, and Shane Drohan to the 40-man roster ahead of the Rule 5 deadline.
The Red Sox designated Nathaniel Lowe and Josh Winckowski for assignment to make room for Sandlin. They also traded a pair of relievers to open two additional spots on the 40-man roster, the team announced.
Chris Murphy was traded to the Chicago White Sox for Venezuelan-born catcher Ronny Hernández. The left-hander returned to the big leagues after a couple of years and performed well, posting a 3.12 ERA with 30 strikeouts in 34.2 innings for the Red Sox.
Craig Breslow also traded Brennan Bernardino to the Colorado Rockies in exchange for outfielder Braiden Ward.
