While there is no legislated hiring freeze at Brockville City Hall, there has been one in practice, and it’s played a big part in a projected year-end surplus .

That’s how Mayor Matt Wren summed up the latest city budget variance report Tuesday, after Coun. Jane Fullarton, who chairs council’s general committee, called the report a “good news story.”

The variance report, a snapshot of Brockville’s fiscal position as of Sept. 30, projects a surplus of $348,929 for city departments, minus deficits projected by the Brockville Police Service ($93,931) and the joint services the city shares with other area municipalities ($14,864).

The result in a net projected surplus of $240,134.
