Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the son of ousted Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has described the death sentence given to his mother by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) of Bangladesh as a "political vendetta". He also expressed gratitude to India for granting her asylum, saying that militants had been conspiring to assassinate the Awami League leader.
"India has essentially saved my mother's life. If she hadn't left Bangladesh, the militants had planned on killing her," he told news agency ANI.
Recalling the circumstances of his mother's dramatic departure, Wazed credited India for foiling the militants' plan to assassinate Hasina.
