OTTAWA - A report detailing the experiences of sexual violence victims within Canada’s criminal justice system is set to be released today. The Office of the Federal Ombudsperson for Victims of Crime initiated an investigation last year to examine how survivors interact with law enforcement and the broader justice system.
Ombudsperson Benjamin Roebuck emphasized the urgent need for improvements in the treatment of crime victims. He noted that victims' rights are frequently overlooked, leading to further trauma for survivors.
The forthcoming report is anticipated to offer recommendations aimed at fostering a more trauma-informed and victim-centered approach within the justice system. This initiative seeks to address the systemic issues that have long affected the treatment of sexual violence survivors in Canada.
The findings and suggestions outlined in the report are expected to contribute to ongoing discussions about reforming the justice system to better support victims of crime.
