The widow of murdered Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi said Tuesday that she was "disappointed" by the way U.S. President Donald Trump described her husband in a meeting alongside the Saudi crown prince.
Speaking in the Oval Office alongside Mohammed bin Salman, Trump described Khashoggi, a fierce critic of the Saudi kingdom who was killed in Istanbul, Turkey in 2018, as a "controversial" man.
Hanan Khashoggi described her husband as "transparent" and "brave." She offered to meet with Trump to "share everything" about him.
U.S. findings declassified at the start of the Biden administration in 2021 determined that the Saudi crown prince likely approved the killing by Saudi agents of Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. Trump officials, during his first administration, refused to release the report.
When posed a question by an ABC journalist about the crown prince's involvement in the killing, Trump called the network "fake news."
"(Prince Mohammed) knew nothing about it. And we can leave it at that. You don’t have to embarrass our guest by asking a question like that," Trump said.
Trump later criticized the ABC journalist for asking the prince a “horrible, insubordinate and just a terrible question," calling her a "terrible reporter."
Prince Mohammed denies involvement in the killing of Khashoggi, who was a Saudi citizen and Virginia resident.
Khashoggi's widow said she is seeking a meeting with the crown prince to "ask his help" retrieving her husband's remains.
She said she is "not satisfied" with subsequent legal proceedings, adding that her current lawyer has been imprisoned.
She added that the Saudi government had "destroyed" her life.
"I'm the second victim still alive," she said
Prince Mohammed was warmly welcomed by Trump Tuesday on his first White House visit in seven years.
In his visit, the crown prince announced Saudi Arabia was increasing its planned investments in the U.S. to $1 trillion, up from $600 billion that the Saudis announced they would pour into the United States when Trump visited the kingdom in May.
