HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - On this date in 1831, James Garfield was born in Orange Township, Ohio.

It’s now called Moreland Hills, which is east of Cleveland.

Garfield became the 20th president of the United States in 1881, but he only served for a matter of months after being shot.

He was a preacher, a lawyer, and a Civil War general.

In 2023, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed a bill designating November 19 as James A. Garfield Day in Ohio.
