Rents in the UK are now at the highest point on record, leaving renters on low incomes struggling to keep up or find an affordable place to live – but there may be signs that the rental boom is starting to fizzle out.

Average private rents in the UK increased by 5% to £1,360 a month in the 12 months up to October 2025, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

But the rate at which rents are rising has been falling in recent months. The October figure is slightly down on the 5.5% recorded up to September 2025.

However, with UK inflation currently at 3.6% and wage growth at 4.2% , rents are still outstripping both with renters feeling the pain of rising bills too.
