NORTH PROVIDENCE – The discussion to this point about algae and other contaminants in the west side of the Wenscott Reservoir has largely missed the actual cause of the problem, says a local civil engineer.
Robert “Larry” Smith, who lives near the problematic side of the reservoir and is a longtime member of the town’s Building Board of Review, said the east side of the reservoir has two sources of water flowing into it and one source flowing out.
“The Wenscott Reservoir is alternatively called ‘Twin Rivers’ because of the two water sources flowing into it,” he said. “So the east side is active flowing water.” The west side, he said, has no active flow in or out of it and was isolated from the main part of the reservoir by the construction of Route 7, Douglas Pike, on a causeway.
