Rachel Reeves is expected to announce a major change to the two-child benefit limit next week as the policy faces continued criticism for pushing children into poverty . The controversial provision has stopped parents being able to claim certain benefits for more than two children since 2017.
Opposition politicians – including the SNP-run Scottish Government – have long derided the cap, with mitigation measures set to come into force north of the border early next year. The controversial government policy limits Child Tax Credit and Universal Credit claims to the first two children in a household.
The Chancellor hinted at changes when she told the BBC it was not right that children in bigger families were "penalised" through "no fault of their own".
