An arrest has been made in the shooting death of Belinda Sarkodie while she was waiting at a Hamilton bus stop on July 11 after a teenager turned himself in, police announced Wednesday morning.

The Hamilton Police Service held a news conference to update the media on the case, saying a 17-year-old is in custody.

After the 26-year-old innocent bystander was killed and another was injured, police issued a warrant for the arrest of a 17-year-old suspected of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder.

"The male suspect opened fire, striking one of the individuals. As he continued to shoot at a second person, an innocent bystander [Sarkodie] was fatally struck," police said in July.

A man who sustained non-life threatening injuries was also shot.
