PORTAGE, MI — Portage honored Terry Urban for 28 years of service on the city council during its Tuesday, Nov. 18, meeting.

He lost the seat to newcomer Kathleen Olmsted in the Nov. 4 election.

“I was on the council for 28 years,” Urban said. “The city is only 63 years old.”

Urban was first elected to the council in 1997, but began his tenure in public service as an appointee to the park board in 1980.

Then, the city was just 17 years old, he said.

The council recognized Urban with a proclamation and a set of flags flown over city hall on his birthday, Nov. 4.

The South Westnedge Dog Park, where Urban has recruited volunteer board members, will be renamed in his honor.
