ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. — The Alamance County Sheriff’s Office says it’s ending its agreement to house and transport ICE detainees — a change that went into effect on Nov. 16, 2025.

Sheriff Terry Johnson told Immigration and Customs Enforcement in a certified letter that the county’s detention center can no longer take in ICE detainees. He pointed to new state requirements coming Dec. 1 under House Bill 307, known as “Iryna’s Law.” The law brings major changes to how counties manage pretrial release, electronic monitoring and the detention of people charged with violent crimes.
