Mumina Abdule fled Somalia for a Kenyan refugee camp to escape violent conflict and famine. In 2004, she immigrated to the U.S.
Now, Abdule’s daughter Rumano Hassan, who goes to Champlain Elementary School on Pine Street, is part of a governor's cabinet.
Rumano, 10, was one of seven fifth-graders — and the sole finalist from Chittenden County — who competed to become Vermont's first-ever kid governor , part of a program of the same name run in five states. Roslyn Fortin, a student at Highgate Elementary, was announced as the winner on Nov. 19, having garnered the most votes from fifth-graders statewide.
