If there were Oscars for themed entertainment, they would be the Thea Awards, and Universal Epic Universe just swept the competition.

Universal Orlando Resort's newest park scored four awards for outstanding achievement this year:

  • Theme Park: Universal Epic Universe
  • Theme Park Land: How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk
  • Ride Experience: Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry
  • Attraction: Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment

Retired Universal Destinations and Experiences Vice President and Executive Art Director Dale Mason will also be recognized with a lifetime achievement award, the Themed Entertainment Association announced on Nov. 18. Their awards gala will be held later.

The association's Thea Awards are among the highest honors in the attractions industry and are judged by peers. To qualify, everyone who worked on a given project must be credited.

"An endeavor of this scale is only possible through the dedication and expertise of countless individuals across every part of our business," Universal Orlando Resort President and COO Karen Irwin said in a statement. "This is a proud moment for our team members who work hard every day to ensure our guests create memories they can cherish for a lifetime."

When Epic Universe opened in May, it was the first major theme park to open in the Orlando area this century. Next year, Universal will debut another park, Universal Kids Resort, in the Dallas area.

Other Thea Award honorees this year include two Las Vegas attractions, the John Wick Experience and live show Bob Marley Hope Road, and Disney Cruise Line’s Haunted Mansion Parlor, which was recognized for Outstanding Achievement – Themed Food & Beverage Experience, on the Disney Treasure. A second Haunted Mansion parlor just opened on the new Disney Destiny.
