The Bruins will be without Charlie McAvoy for the foreseeable future.

Marco Sturm told reporters on Wednesday that the defenseman underwent facial surgery and there is no timetable for his return, per The Athletic’s Fluto Shinzawa .

McAvoy was injured during Boston’s win against the Montreal Canadiens when a puck deflected off his face . He fell to the ice immediately after the deflection — which left a good amount of blood on the ice — and was helped to the locker room.

The Bruins summoned Franklin native Michael Callahan from Providence on Tuesday in order to have a seventh defenseman on Boston’s four-game road trip.

In 19 games for the Bruins this season, McAvoy has 14 points and has averaged 2:46 of ice time.
