When Pita, a very pregnant dog, arrived at a Los Angeles shelter, the staff realized they couldn’t provide her with the care she needed. The shelter was already overcrowded, and Pita was on the verge of giving birth. She needed special attention and a quiet space, something the shelter simply couldn’t offer.
Desperate for help, they contacted MaeDay Rescue , a Los Angeles-based nonprofit, and the group quickly agreed to take over Pita’s care.

When Natalie Garcia, founder of MaeDay Rescue, saw Pita for the first time, she was shocked at the size of her belly.
“She looked like she had swallowed a watermelon. It was insane. She could hardly walk. She was so uncomfortable,” Garcia told The Dodo .
