MANCHESTER, N.H. —

With the federal government back open, a Senate subcommittee is discussing how the longest government shutdown in history affected travel and air safety.

During the shutdown, airlines faced widespread delays and cancellations and also dealt with severe staffing issues as federal employees worked without pay.

Industry leaders, including former New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, spoke in the hearing and shared what they hope to see change in the future.

During the 43-day shutdown, the federal government called for at least 40 major airports to reduce their flight schedules because of severe staffing shortages of air traffic controllers.
