A woman had been reunited with a toddler after a man allegedly stole her car with the child sleeping inside.

The red Volkswagen was parked in a supermarket car park in Shepparton when the alleged theft occurred around 2pm on November 14.

The woman told investigators that she went to the supermarket on Maude Street and left her sleeping toddler in the car.

The unknown male offender allegedly "took the opportunity" to steal the Volkswagen and reversed out of the parking lot without realising the baby was on board, police said.

But he soon discovered the toddler, CCTV showed.

Footage from the car park showed the man placing the baby in a cardboard box between parked vehicles, before driving away.

The woman returned from the supermarket and found the toddler before contacting authorities
