West Virginia University (WVU) Health System will acquire five hospitals from Pennsylvania's Independence Health System, WVU Medicine said in a statement Wednesday.

Butler Memorial, Clarion, Frick, Latrobe and Westmoreland Hospitals, along with Independence Health System’s affiliated physician groups and other subsidies, will join the WVU Health System in the fall of 2026.

According to WVU Health System, this merger will expand clinical services and access to specialty care, strengthen financial sustainability through shared resourcing and efficient operations and enhance patient outcomes through partnership with Peak Health, the WVU Health System’s affiliated health insurance organization.
