The Kerala High Court on November 19 delivered sharp criticism against authorities responsible for managing the Sabarimala pilgrimage after an overwhelming surge of devotees caused severe congestion in and around the temple.

The Bench observed that the situation spiralled due to poor coordination among officials and questioned why the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) had failed to implement earlier directives. Judges noted that many of the required preparations “should have been completed six months ago” and demanded to know why such a large number of devotees had been permitted to enter the temple precinct at the same time.

The court suggested introducing a sector-wise division of devotees to ease congestion, warning that pushing large crowds forward was unsafe and unsustainable.
