KINGSTON, N.Y. — Former state Trooper Christopher Baldner seems unlikely to be convicted of second-degree murder for the Dec. 22, 2020, death of 11-year-old Monica Goods.

On Wednesday, the nine-man, three-woman jury asked to hear again the definition of manslaughter, one of eight charges the 18-year veteran trooper faces in connection with two separate crashes on the state Thruway.

Ulster County Judge Bryan Rounds had previously told jurors they could only consider the manslaughter charge “if and only if” they found him not guilty of murder.

The jurors’ request to hear the definition of manslaughter again suggested that they had already determined Baldner had not acted with “depraved indifference to human life.”
