ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - If you live or work in the city, you pay the 1% St. Louis City earnings tax.
The earnings tax has been in place in the city for decades and helps fund city services.
The city’s budget committee met on Wednesday to discuss the earnings tax. Per state statute, every five years, the voters must decide whether or not to keep paying the 1% tax .
Alderman Michael Browning said the earnings tax is the single largest source of revenue for the city and helps cover more than 1/3 of the city’s budget.
“If you look at your tax bill every year, you’ll notice it makes up the largest chunk for the city, but it is not the biggest tax on your bill,” Alderman Browning said.
