SUPERIOR, Wis. (Northern News Now) - The Superior Midwest Energy Terminal, the Duluth-Superior Port’s only coal terminal, will be closing next summer, leaving 60 employees without jobs.
Superior Port Director Jason Serck says the direct employees won’t be the only ones impacted.
“There’s an effect that kind of goes down the line, so it does rattle the community, and it’s, you know, we don’t like to lose business, and we wanna make sure we’re taking care of our own,” said Serck.
Serck adds that both the railroad and vendors that serve the site will also take a hit.
Midwest Energy Resources Company (MERC) is located on the Superior side of the port and has operated there since the 1970s, providing coal by rail, vessel, and truck.
