MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - Wisconsin Assembly Democrats were blocked Wednesday from forcing a vote on a bill to expand Medicaid coverage for mothers, despite bipartisan support for the measure.
The bill would extend Medicaid coverage for mothers to one year after giving birth, up from the current 60 days.
Democrats attempted to use a petition to bring the bill to the floor during the Assembly’s final session of the year, but Assembly Speaker Robin Vos moved the bill back to a committee to prevent the vote.
“This is a blatant effort by the Speaker to prevent this important bill from getting a vote,” State Rep. Greta Neubauer, the Democratic minority leader, said.
Vos opposes the bill and did not respond to requests for comment.
