BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - Despite popular belief, some students continue to learn how to read and write in cursive. While it’s not required to be taught in Vermont, some teachers are keeping its history alive. Reporter Lucy Caile visited Christ the King school in Burlington for a penmanship refresher.
“Although a lot of schools have let it go, I think it’s so important, and even out of third grade, they’re very excited,” said Jan Cootey, a third-grade teacher at Christ the King.
Less than 10 years ago, only 14 states required cursive in the curriculum. Now, 24 must teach it in some capacity, including New Hampshire.
