Filmmaker SS Rajamouli, who is known for incorporating the Hindu epics – the Ramayana and the Mahabharata – in his magnum-opus films, found himself at the centre of a storm over his remarks about Lord Hanuman and atheist beliefs. At the grand launch of his upcoming film, 'Varanasi', the filmmaker confessed that he was an atheist and expressed his anger at Lord Hanuman after technical glitches marred the event.

Addressing the crowd, Rajamouli said, "This is an emotional moment for me. I don't believe in God. My dad came and said, 'Lord Hanuman is behind me and is guiding me'. Is this how he takes care – thinking of this, I'm angry. My wife is also fond of Lord Hanuman. She behaves as if he were her friend and converses with him. I got angry at her as well."
