Steyer is campaigning on California’s affordability crisis and pledges to build one million homes by loosening permitting and zoning regulations. He has long been active in state politics, backing measures such as the tobacco tax increase and Proposition 50. Other Democrats in the race include Antonio Villaraigosa, Betty Yee, Katie Porter, Tony Thurmond, and Xavier Becerra. On the Republican side, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco and political commentator Steve Hilton are the leading candidates.
