Crisps are the backbone of snack tables at festive drinks and impromptu get-togethers. And this year, supermarkets and manufacturers have gone out of their way to produce even more novel flavours than ever before for the Christmas season.

And it makes sense. Take something as bland, appealing and savoury as a potato crisp or tortilla chip, fire all sorts of powdered meat flavours (or faux meats) and add in some spice and you’ve theoretically got a Christmas winner.

But there are, in fact, limits to what can be considered festive, let alone what tastes good as a crisp.
