The race to fill a Newark City Council seat vacated last year by Lamonica McIver ’s election to Congress was won by the candidate backed by McIver and Mayor Ras J. Baraka , according to results certified on Tuesday.

Amina Bey won the Central Ward seat with 3,302 votes, or 39.4% of the 8,381 votes cast by residents of Newark’s Central Ward, according to certified results posted by Essex County Clerk Christopher Durkin.

In an Instagram post, Bey said the victory makes her the first Muslim elected official in the state’s largest city.

“Together, we made history,” Bey’s post stated . “I am honored to serve as the first Muslim elected to the Newark Municipal Council and I carry this milestone with profound gratitude and responsibility.”
