Police have used pepper spray on an elderly man who allegedly threatened to harm himself and other residents at an aged care home with a metal ornament.

Authorities said workers at the home in Sydney ’s south west were forced to lock themselves in a room just before 8pm on Wednesday, with the man accused of “swinging” the object at staff.

“Upon arrival, officers located the 87-year-old man in the foyer, still armed with the metal ornament,” NSW Police said.

“He refused police direction to put it down and OC spray was deployed.”

The man was restrained and checked over by paramedics before being taken to Campbelltown Hospital.
