Donald Trump is still facing down a fractured GOP, with infighting threatening stability in the party, according to a political expert.
Will Sommer believes the fallout between Trump and former MAGA personalities like Marjorie Taylor Greene is only adding to the strain put on the president. The GOP appear split on the cost-of-living crisis and health, and Trump eventually had a change of heart and decided to sign a bill releasing the Epstein files after a near-unanimous 427 to 1 vote.
Appearing on Fast Talk with Molly Jong-Fast, Sommer talked about the "fractured moment" for the Trump movement. He said, "I think the Trump movement right now is really at a fractured moment. They're coming off of this difficult election cycle, there's all this negative stuff going on, all this fighting over Charlie Kirk's legacy, but the big thing right now is Epstein."
"This is kind of represented by Marjorie Taylor Greene, who is, or was, the ultimate Trump fan." Sommer went on to suggest there was a "disappointment" factor at play because of Trump's actions.
Sommer continued, "There's a disappointment that Trump won't release the Epstein files, you also have this growing sense in MAGA, I think, that Trump isn't going to do the popular stuff they wanted. He's palling around with rich people and tech billionaires and throwing the average MAGA person under the bus."
Trump has since signed the Epstein files bill, meaning all files that can be released will be made public within 30 days by the Department of Justice. The president had initially opposed the release of the files but had a change of heart when Republican representatives did not waver in their desire for the files to be released.
Even with the files set to be released, DNC Chair Ken Martin thinks Trump will "play games" and delay the release of the files, or redact crucial information.
He wrote, "For months, Donald Trump and his White House have done everything in their power to defy and deceive the American people and keep the Epstein Files buried. Now — as his approval ratings plummet to the lowest level of this term — he’s suddenly had a ‘change of heart.’"
"But we can see where this is headed: He’s already threatening to play games with the files that are released and those that are withheld. The public deserves transparency, and the survivors of Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes deserve justice and accountability. It’s time to finally deliver what Americans have been demanding from the start: the truth."
